Ely Culbertson (July 22, 1891 – December 27, 1955) was a monumental figure in the world of contract bridge during the 1930s, playing a pivotal role in popularizing the game. Born Elie Almon Culbertson in Ploeşti, Romania, he was the son of an American oil explorer and spent his early years living in Russia. Culbertson received his education in Geneva and Paris, which contributed to his cosmopolitan outlook.
Culbertson moved to the United States, where he became deeply involved in the contract bridge scene, a card game that was gaining popularity at the time. He was not just a player but also an innovator and a showman, known for his charismatic personality and his ability to popularize the game. Culbertson developed and promoted the Culbertson System of contract bridge bidding, which was a significant departure from the then-prevalent auction bridge. His system, detailed in various books and pamphlets, became widely adopted, cementing his status as a leading authority on the game.
Beyond his contributions to contract bridge, Culbertson was also known for his efforts towards world peace. In the latter part of his life, he shifted his focus from bridge to advocating for international cooperation and peace, a cause that he was passionate about until his death in Brattleboro, Vermont, in 1955.
Culbertson's legacy in the bridge world is still recognized today, not only for his contributions to the development and popularization of the game but also for his broader humanitarian efforts.
